Greek Journalist Accuses NSO Officials Over Pegasus Spyware

(MENAFN) Greek journalist and former European Parliament member Stelios Kouloglou filed a criminal complaint Monday against officials of Israeli spyware company NSO Group, alleging that his phone was infected with Pegasus while he was involved in a parliamentary investigation into surveillance technologies.

The complaint was submitted to prosecutors in Athens following a forensic analysis by the University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab, which Kouloglou said detected Pegasus on his phone around Oct. 21, 2022, and again on March 6 and 7, 2023.

At the time of the alleged infections, Kouloglou was serving as a substitute member of a European Parliament committee examining the use of Pegasus, Predator and other forms of spyware. His complaint argues that the alleged infections occurred during important stages of the committee’s investigation.

According to the complaint, the spyware could potentially have allowed those responsible to obtain access to private communications, contact lists, documents, location data and information connected to his political activities.

The filing calls for an investigation into possible violations involving communications privacy, unauthorized access to digital information and personal data protection laws.

After submitting the complaint, Kouloglou said surveillance was an issue with implications for the wider public and voiced hope that Greek prosecutors would examine the allegations.

His lawyer, Zacharias Kesses, said that no previous action had been taken despite the allegations having already come to light.
